Oomnitza is proud to be named by Gartner as a Representative Vendor in Hardware Asset Management.
Hardware asset management is needed within a technology asset management strategy to oversee hardware visibility, manage life cycles, optimize costs and reduce risk. This Market Guide helps end-user services leaders navigate the HAM market and choose the right tool.
As per Gartner, enterprises are increasingly managing the life cycle and associated costs of hardware assets, which is especially important after merger/acquisition or divestment events. This includes traditional IT assets (e.g., computers, infrastructure, servers) and an increasing number of workplace Internet of Things (IoT) and operational technology (OT) devices that connect to the network. Offline devices of any type are more difficult to manage because they cannot be electronically discovered or inventoried. This includes devices that have been purchased but not yet deployed, are under repair, and are lost or stolen, and devices that cannot be connected for security or other purposes. Offline devices require a manual inventory, which few enterprises do consistently, if at all.
Violations of regulations, such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Payment Card Industry (PCI), and fixed asset tax audits are driving fines and audit expenses. Most are associated with inaccurate location management (property tax), or lost or stolen devices. The costs to support audits and maintain compliance are driving efforts to get hardware asset management under control.
In addition, initiatives such as moving on-premises workloads to the cloud, mitigating cyber risk, cost optimization, sustainable IT and reducing technical debt are renewing interest in HAM. Many organizations have historically limited their HAM efforts to only what is needed to support SAM, which only delivered on part of HAM’s value proposition. Today, Gartner is seeing momentum in hardware asset management and, therefore, the tools that are needed for the task.
